BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The St. John's men's soccer team opened the 2009 season with a scoreless draw against Indiana in the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. Redshirt senior Derby Carrillo made three saves to notch the shutout for the Red Storm (0-0-1). For Indiana (0-0-1), keeper Luis Soffner made two saves.

"Indiana is a great team with great tradition and it was a great environment tonight," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "I thought that we improved throughout the game and created some great chances in the overtime periods."

It was Indiana that produced the first good scoring chance as Eric Alexander put a header on net from close range in the 14th minute, but Carrillo made the save.

St. John's had a pair of corner kicks in the 31st minute. The first resulted in a shot by Pablo Punyed that was blocked by a defender, and the second was cleared by the Indiana defense. Tadeu Terra broke free in the 34th minute, but fired a shot high and the game remained scoreless going into halftime.

After a Carrillo save on an Alexander shot in the 49th minute, the Red Storm had a free kick from 35-yards out in the 63rd minute. Nelson Becerra took the kick and collected his rebound off of the wall before blasting a shot high on his second effort.

Carrillo made a diving save in the 85th minute, stopping a low blast from Alexander to keep the game scoreless.

An Indiana foul in the 89th minute gave the Red Storm a great scoring chance as Terra lined up for a free kick from the left side and just outside of the box. Terra sent a curling shot on goal, but Sofner was there for the save and the game headed to overtime.

St. John's had a great chance in the 94th minute as Adam Himeno broke free and rifled a shot on net. Soffner tipped the ball with a diving effort and St. John's controlled the rebound, but could not create a shot. Indiana earned a corner kick with 10 seconds remaining in the first overtime, but the kick sailed long and the game was sent to a second overtime.

The Red Storm had the only opportunity in the second overtime as Terra sent a shot high in the 110th minute and the game ended in a scoreless draw.

St. John's returns to action at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 6, taking on Wake Forest as part of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.
