Montclair, NJ (9/30/09) – Senior Michael Cullen (Clementon, NJ / Highland) scored early and junior Larry Geraghty (Cranford, NJ / St. Benedict’s Prep) tallied once late as 11th/6th ranked Montclair State now holds the longest home winning streak in NCAA Men’s Soccer history as the Red Hawks blanked Kean University, 2-0 at Sprague Field on Wednesday evening.
Senior Joe Cullen (Clementon, NJ / Highland) picked up an assist as the Red Hawks now stand alone with the record as they picked up their 41st consecutive home victory as improving to 9-0-1 on the year, 4-0-0 in the NJAC. MSU moved ahead of Ohio Wesleyan’s mark of 40 set from 1991-1993. Tulsa holds the Division I record at 39 from 1988 to 1992 while Cal State (L.A.) won 32 straight from 1982-1986 to claim the Division II record.
Junior goalkeeper Alfredo Oquendo (North Plainfield, NJ / North Plainfield) had eight saves for Kean, which dropped its second straight, falling to 4-5-2 overall, 0-3-1 in conference play.
MSU has not lost at either of its on-campus fields (MSU Soccer Park or Sprague Field) since a 4-2 loss to Richard Stockton in October 2005. During the streak, MSU has outscored its opponents 138-18 to with 25 of those victories coming via shutout and 23 coming against conference foes.
Michael Cullen got Montclair off on the right foot as he scored 6:05 into the contest. It was Cullen’s fifth tally of the season and came less than a minute after Kevin Brown’s (Wayne, NJ / Wayne Valley) header was saved by Oquendo. Montclair would go on to outshot the Cougars 8-4 in the half with Oquendo and Teddy Ritter (Belford, NJ / Middletown North) each making two saves.
The Red Hawks held the shot advantage in the second half as well, 6-4, but could not get anything else past Oquendo until the 81:42 mark of the contest. Joe Cullen moved in one-on-one against Oquendo before sliding a pass across to a trailing Geraghty, who banged home the shot for his second of the season.
Ritter, the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week, made four saves as he recorded his fourth shutout this season and Montclair’s seventh overall. Each team had five corner kicks apiece.
In addition to its long home winning streak, Montclair State had also won 15 consecutive NJAC regular-season contests and 20 overall versus league rivals, which includes four NJAC Tournament games as well as one NCAA Tournament contest.
The Red Hawks will look to extend their home winning streak on Sunday, October 4 as they host Eastern Connecticut at MSU Soccer Park beginning at 2:00 pm. Kean is back out on the road on Saturday, October 3 in Wayne against William Paterson in a 1:00 pm start.
