Dubuque, Iowa - The Loras College men's soccer team posted win number 12 in the Rock Bowl of 2009 on Sunday evening over the Macalester College Scots, 2-0 in front of over 500 fans. The Duhawks advance to play the Dominican University Stars in the Sectionals of the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships with the shutout victory.
The first half was even on the stats sheet and on the field, with both teams scratching their way to five shots. Only one bouncing ball from distance required a save by Macalester goalkeeper Mark Mullany in the opening 45 minutes of action, which was largely spent in the middle third of the field while the teams re-acquainted themselves with one another. Loras posted a 4-0 victory back on September 13 in the Rock Bowl, but the Scots were looking to change the result for the rematch.
After playing to a scoreless first half, Macalester hit the crossbar with a shot off the foot of Reid Usedom just over two minutes into the second frame. The Scots would spread out a couple more chances over the remainder of the half, but would not be able to solve the Duhawks defense in the end.
In the 57th minute, junior midfielder/forward Miguel Bonilla broke the scoreless tie and made Loras history with a low driven shot that came to the six yard box from a Santiago Mejia corner kick. Bonilla rushed over to his teammates to celebrate the 45th goal of his career, breaking the 24-hour-old tie he had with former Loras standout Brad Johnson for the program's all time lead.
Loras gained momentum, more possession, and one more goal as the final thirty minutes ticked off the scoreboard above the Duhawks' home field. Junior defender Tom Jennings doubled the lead in the 75th minute when he headed home another Mejia corner kick. The Scots wouldn't manage a shot on goal in the final 15 minutes and the celebration ensued in Dubuque.
The loss ended the Macalester season at 13-8-1. The Scots won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's automatic bid this season and say goodbye to four seniors, including last night's hero in the win over Grinnell, Carson Gorecki. The win for Loras matches them against the Dominican University Stars in the sectionals, a squad they played in the regional championship in 2008. Loras won that meeting 1-0 in the Rock Bowl on their way to their second consecutive semifinals appearance. The teams now await the site of their matchup from the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championships Committee. Whitworth (2-1 over Claremont Mudd-Scripps) and Hardin-Simmons (2-0 over Trinity) round out the sectional.
