Midfielder Clif Kipper (Hayes, Va.) scored in the 71st minute of play to lift #2 seed Christopher Newport University to a 1-0 win over #3 Averett University in the second semifinal of the 2010 USA South Mens Soccer Tournament.

Kipper scored off a touch pass from Winston Mattheisen (Norfolk, Va.), whos touch pass off his heel set Kipper up for the lone goal.

Justin Wolfe (Williamsburg, Va.) made six saves, playing all 90 minutes in net for the Captains (18-1-1). Nate Barker made seven saves for Averett (12-6-2).

Christopher Newport out-shot Averett 17-11 and held a slim 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Both teams had four scoring opportunities nullified by offside calls.

The Captains will face top seed North Carolina Wesleyan College in tomorrows USA South Championship match at the Smith River Sports Complex at 2 p.m. The Bishops advanced with a 3-0 win over #4 Methodist University in the earlier semifinal.

The winner of the title match tomorrow will claim the leagues automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Mens Soccer Tournament.
