DELAWARE, Ohio – Senior Danny Thompson scored in the first minute as No. 1 Messiah defeated No. 5 Ohio Wesleyan 2-1 to start the 2011 season. Freshman Jack Thompson’s goal proved to be the difference.
Messiah dominated the first half outshooting the Battling Bishops 10-3 on its way to a 1-0 lead. The second half had a more even shot disparity (7-8) but it didn’t lead to more goals. Ohio Wesleyan didn’t score until the 85th minute and by then it was down two.
Goalie Jake Berry was crucial in the Falcons victory with 11 saves.
No. 2 Lynchburg 2, No. 18 Emory 0
ROANOKE, VA – The No. 2 Lynchburg College men’s soccer team began the 2011 season with a 2-0 win against No. 18 Emory University in the Roanoke College Invitational on Friday night.
Lynchburg took a 1-0 lead on the Eagles at 1:19 of the first half when Emory put the ball in their own net, resulting in an early lead for the Hornets. Freshman Luke Moore scored his first collegiate goal at 49:07 after a pass from sophomore Michael Venegas of the second half to give Lynchburg a 2-0 lead.
Sophomore Michael Releford made four saves in the game for Lynchburg. Trenton Splinder made one save in the loss for Emory.
