Roundup: No. 5 Clayton State rebounds after Friday’s loss
MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Junior Chris Tsonis scored with just over 13 minutes remaining in regulation and Joey Kapinos made three saves in goal as No. 16 Southern New Hampshire blanked No. 4 Dowling 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Larkin Field. The Penmen, who posted their third consecutive shutout to open the season, improved to 3-0, while the Golden Lions suffered their first loss of the season and fall to 3-1.
Southern New Hampshire has opened the season with three consecutive shutouts for the first time since the 2000 campaign. The Penmen also extended their home unbeaten streak to 14 games (12-0-2) and have registered 10 straight shutouts at Larkin Field.
On the goal at the 76:47 mark, Christian Rodriguez, playing the ball on the left side of the field, delivered a crossing pass into the box to Tsonis. Tsonis took a touch and fired a low shot from 12 yards out that beat Dowling keeper Chris Kucera. Tsonis has scored in all three of SNHU’s games to date.
No. 5 Clayton State 2, Palm Beach Atlantic 0
BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Clayton State rebounded successfully from Friday’s defeat against Lynn by recording a hard-fought 2-1 triumph versus Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday in the Wyndham Garden Inn/Lynn Soccer Classic.
Clayton State took the early lead in the first half on senior forward Ryan Pugh’s fourth goal in as many games in the 23rd minute. He took a through ball from Kenny Mena on the right side of the penalty box and beat Sailfish goalkeeper Jonathan Strunk one-on-one for the game’s first goal.
The score stayed 1-0 until Palm Beach Atlantic tied the game in the 65th minute when Kenny Hogg scored for the Sailfish off a ricochet off the crossbar on a shot attempt by Kevin Ireland. But the deadlock was short-lived as the Lakers struck a minute later on Mena’s fifth goal of the season off an assist by Arturo Cruz.
