No. 1 Northern Kentucky gets help
Roundup: No. 3 Midwestern State wins in penalty kicks
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- A misplay Southern Indiana's defense late in the second half helped No. 1 Northern Kentucky escape with a 3-2 victory Sunday afternoon.
Tied 2-2 in the 79th minute, Southern Indiana's Tyler White deflected the ball into his team's own net while trying to clear a Norse cross in the box. The goal gave Northern Kentucky a 3-2 lead.
Southern Indiana had a chance to tie the contest in the 88th minute, but Rush Dugger's free kick hit the right post and the Norse held on for the road victory. The defending NCAA Division II national champions improved to 4-0 overall, 2-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
No. 3 Midwestern State 2, Colorado-Colorado Springs 0
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- No. 3 Midwestern State converted a pair of penalty kicks to put away Colorado-Colorado Springs 2-0 at Mountain Lion Stadium.
"We didn't play well and had a hard time getting going," MSU coach Doug Elder said. "It thought we'd come back and play better, but it was worse. We had hard time catching our breath in the altitude. We were dragging on the fourth day of this trip, but a win is a win and we'll take it."
The Mustangs extended their regular season unbeaten string to 36 games and were able to sweep their Colorado weekend swing after a 3-1 victory against Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday.
"My expectations are so high, but you can't take away from winning on the road," Elder said. "We just have to keep getting better. Our guys are smart and mature enough to know that."
