POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — After a scoreless first half, top-ranked Christopher Newport erupted for four goals in the second to capture a 4-0 road win against Vassar (5-2-1). CNU improves to 5-0-1 this season as four different players scored for the Captains.
Karl Kummer led the way for the Captains, scoring a goal and adding an assist, while CNU leading scorers Winston Mattheisen and Brian Lybert combined for a goal as well.
After 45 minutes, the score was tied 0-0 as neither team was able to break through. Each goalkeeper made three saves in the first half, as CNU goalkeeper Justin Wolfe faced eight shots in the first half.
Christopher Newport wasted no time breaking through in the second half, as freshman Jalon Brown connected for the eventual game-winner off an assist from Caleb Lewis just 1:12 into the frame. Lewis’ throw-in reached the box, where Brown headed it into the lower corner of the net for the score.
In the 62nd minute of action, Lybert crossed a pass into the box for Mattheisen, who scored his fourth goal of the season. Just 10 minutes later, sophomore Alex Makumbi sent a long ball over the defense, and Kummer reached the ball first. Kummer, a junior had a breakaway down the left side and his shot got by Vassar keeper Ryan Grimme.
CNU wrapped up the scoring barrage in the 77th minute when sophomore Jack Cooper connected for his third goal of the season. He followed up a rebound off Kummer’s shot on-goal, saved by Grimme.
The Captains took nine shots in the second half, putting five on-goal. CNU had ten shots on-goal while holding Vassar to just four in the game. Wolfe posted his second shutout of the season, saving all four shots.
