DANVILLE, Va. — Well into the second overtime period, Averett had played toe-to-toe with No. 25 Roanoke, engaging in a scoreless duel.
That changed in the 106th minute, thanks to an unlucky bounce in the Cougars’ direction.
As Roanoke’s Brian White fired a shot from the left side of the box, Averett goalkeeper Nate Barker came out to defend and deflected the shot into the air. The backspin on the ball allowed it to keep traveling over Barker’s head and before Averett could clear the ball, it bounced into the goal to give Roanoke a 1-0 victory on Wednesday at the Cougar Den.
Roanoke (7-2-1) led in the shot column 26-11, with eight of them on goal. Barker finished with seven saves, including several at close range.
It was the second loss of the season for Averett (6-2-1), which also lost a 1-0 decision to No. 15 Maryville on Sept. 17.
