UC Riverside pulls off upset
Anteaters’ Pizzarro scored game-winning goal 2:25 remaining
IRVINE, Calif. -- UC Riverside is in the driver's seat to clinch its first postseason berth thanks to Saturday evening's 3-2 road win against No. 9 UC Irvine.
Cesar Diaz Pizarro provided the winning goal Saturday with 2:25 remaining in regulation. It was his eighth goal of the season and the program-record eighth game-winning goal of his career.
Cameron Iwasa put the Anteaters on the board first as he took a Christopher Santana pass and forced it past Highlanders keeper Cody Suppé. Jose Diaz tied the match at one in the 39th minute of play when he corralled Leslie Hayden's free kick and scored from five yards out.
Christian Hernandez gave UC Irvine the lead again 12:27 into the second period when he was on the receiving end of a Miguel Ibarra pass and placed the ball inside the far post.
Just over 11 minutes later, UCR's Humberto Santiago grabbed a rebound in the box and dropped it inside the far post to tie the game, 2-2.
Richie Osborne then found Diaz Pizarro with a cross in the box for the game winner as the teams appeared headed for overtime.
