Last-minute goal dooms Charlotte
Walker’s goal in final minute lifts Xavier past 49ers
Xavier redshirt freshman Will Walker scored the game-winning goal in the 93rd minute to help defending champion and the sixth-seeded Musketeers stun third-seeded Charlotte 2-1 on Thursday during first-round action at the Atlantic-10 tournament at Robert R. Hermann Stadium on the campus of Saint Louis.
With the win, Xavier (11-4-3) advances to Friday's semifinals where it will face top-seed and co-regular-season champion Fordham, while the loss drops Charlotte to 13-4-2 on the season.
The nationally-ranked 49ers struck first in the match, scoring in the 13th minute, as sophomore midfielder Aidan Kirkbride scored on a shot inside the right post from 20 yards out.
Xavier quickly retaliated, notching the equalizer in the 31st minute courtesy of All-Conference second team selection Luke Spencer. Spencer scored unassisted on a shot straight-on from approximately 22 yards out.
The two teams battled in the second half with the 49ers outshooting the Muskies, 9-2. However, Xavier would record the only shot it would need in overtime, as Walker drilled a shot into the net from 12 yards out off a pass from Spencer.
For the match, Charlotte held the advantage on shots (14-6) and the two squads were even on corners (1-1).
