HARTSVILLE, S.C. – The opening game of the first round of the Southeast Regional of the NCAA tournament was a double-overtime game that saw the second-seeded Flagler come out on top with a 2-1 win against sixth-seeded Lees-McRae.
Marco Padilla gave the Saints the win with a one-timer 19 seconds into the second overtime period. Will Frandsen had the assist on the goal.
A very evenly matched game, Flagler took the lead with an unassisted goal from Branden Langenberg at the end of the first half. Lees-McRae scored the equalizer 10 minutes into the second half on an unassisted goal of their own from James Smith.
The score remained even at one through the remainder of regulation time and through the first overtime until Padilla’s game-winner in the opening seconds of the second overtime.
Flagler held the advantage in shots 16-10, with the Bobcats’ Thomas Rusling picking up seven saves.
The Saints improve to 16-3-2 on the year and advance to play the winner of the top-seeded Coker and the fourth-seeded Mars Hill on Sunday.
Lees-McRae’s season comes to an end with a record of 16-6-1.
