Western N.E. slides past SUNYIT
Bartnik scores only goal as Golden Bears reach second round
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Sophomore forward Jake Bartnik scored the game-winning goal in the 27th minute to lead Western New England to a 1-0 win against SUNYIT in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament on Saturday at Suprenant Field.
No. 19 Western New England (18-3-1) will advance to host No. 2 St. Lawrence (17-0-1) at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the second round. The Saints advanced with an impressive 4-0 win against SUNY Maritime in the earlier match-up.
Bartnik notched the game’s lone goal as he dribbled around the keeper to finish on a tremendous through ball from senior midfielder Shawn Fitzpatrick.
The Golden Bears had the majority of chances in the contest, holding an 11-1 edge in shots on target. WNE also enjoyed a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Fitzpatrick and junior midfielder Shawn DaCruz each put three attempts on frame.
The Wildcats had their best chance to score in the 57th minute as senior forward Nico Facey went in alone on goal but was met by sophomore goalkeeper Domenick Villano.
Villano recorded the shutout, his eighth of the season, to improve his record to 16-2 between the pipes.
Sophomore goalkeeper Malick Faye was outstanding in defeat, turning away 10 shots to keep his side in the contest.
SUNYIT, champions of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), close out their season at 9-6-4.
