Rockhurst upends Northern Kentucky
Magee scores twice to help hand Tocco 600th career victory
KANSAS CITY -- Sophomore Mark Magee scored both of Rockhurst’s goals to lead the sixth-ranked Hawks to a 2-0 victory against 22nd-ranked Northern Kentucky in the second round of the NCAA Division II Men’s Soccer Championship.
Magee now leads the Hawks with 14 goals. Ryan Bass posted his 13th shutout of the season, which leads all Division II goalkeepers.
The win was No. 600 for Rockhurst coach Tony Tocco, who becomes the third men’s college coach to reach 600 or more career victories as Rockhurst improved to 17-2-2.
On Friday, Nick McDonald scored his 10th goal of the season to lead Rockhurst to a 1-0 victory against Saginaw Valley State in the first round. McDonald scored on a shot from eight yards out in the 56th minute.
The Hawks have gone unbeaten in their last 16 games (14-0-2). Rockhurst captured the regular-season title in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Rockhurst last hosted NCAA tournament play in 2008, falling to Lewis in penalty kicks in the first round. The Hawks are making their fifth appearance in the NCAA Championship.
