Extra period gives Tulsa time to take out No. 3 New Mexico 2-1 for win
TULSA, Okla. – Tulsa freshman Bryce Follensbee scored the game-winner as the men’s soccer team upset third-ranked New Mexico in overtime on Friday night in the Hurricane Classic at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium. TU moved to 2-0 on the season, while UNM fell to 1-1 overall.
“New Mexico played very well tonight, but we grinded out a win,” head coach Tom McIntosh said. “We had a couple great chances in the first half and we started out the game well, but we didn’t play as well in the second half. It was a good win against a very good team.”
Follensbee’s goal came at the 91:42 mark as he punched in the game-winner from the left side and Tony Rocha picked up the assist. This was Follensbee’s third goal of the season, as he leads the Golden Hurricane with six points.
In the first half, Matthew Gibbons put the Lobos on the board at the 25:48 mark as he headed in a cross by Blake Smith for the lead. Akeil Barrett tied up the score two minutes later as he drilled in a penalty kick after UNM’s Travis Campbell was issued a red card for a handball in the box.
The Lobos had a 19-12 lead in shots, but Tulsa had a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal, while UNM had a 6-1 lead in corner kicks.
Follensbee had a team-best five shots, while Barrett had three attempts. Mark Pais logged all 91:42 in goal and recorded five saves.
