SAINT GEORGE, Utah -- No. 8 Cal State L.A. did not get their desired results in their season opener as they were stunned by Dixie State.

The Golden Eagles got a first-half goal from Antti Arvola, but could not muster any more offense in the 2-1 loss to the host Red Storm team..

Cal State L.A. had an 18-7 edge in shots, including a missed penalty kick early in the second half. The Golden Eagles only put seven of the 18 shots on frame and suffered the season-opening defeat. Cal State L.A. is the defending California Collegiate Athletic Association and NCAA Division II West Region champions.

The Golden Eagles fell into an early hole, giving up a goal in the ninth minute of the contest. Garrett Garcia scored a header off a cross from Michael Ropelate.

Cal State L.A. would tie the game in the 34th minute when Arvola scored on a free kick from long distance to tie it 1-1.

The Golden Eagles had a golden opportunity to take the lead early in the second half, but Arvola's penalty kick bid was stopped by Dixie State goalkeeper Ryan Brubaker.

David Stirland scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 66th minute on Dixie State's second header of the game.

Cal State L.A. had a couple late bids to tie the game, but a shot by Arvola was saved by goalkeeper Ryan Brubaker and a header by Andy Lopez sailed high. Waleed Cassis made three saves for the Golden Eagles. Arvola had a match-high six shots, while Tyler Perez had four shots and Jordan Payne added three shots.
