Bridgewater (Va.) capitalizes on limited chances, shocks Salisbury
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. -- No. 12 Salisbury dropped its first match of 2012 in a 2-1 loss to Bridgewater (Va.).
The Sea Gulls got on the board first with an early goal but were unable to hold the lead, despite limiting Bridgewater to only eight shots in the game.
Senior midfielder Jimmy Mundy netted his first goal of the season in the 18th minute to give Salisbury a 1-0 lead early in the game. Junior forward Trevor Sharpe helped out with an assist on the play.
Salisbury held the lead until the 36th minute when midfielder Ryan Tavernaris scored for the Eagles to tie the game 1-1. The goal was the first goal given up by the Gulls' defense this season.
The teams took the tie into the half, and the Gulls went into the break leading the shooting margin 14-2.
During the second half, the teams stayed deadlocked before Bridgewater took the lead on a goal by forward Sawyer Janes.
Despite outshooting the Eagles 26-8 and registering more corner kicks, 10-2, the Sea Gulls were unable to capitalize on any more chances in the match.
Senior goalkeeper John Vnenchak took the loss while making one save.
