Monge, Estrada power UCLA's late surge to sink 11th-ranked UC Irvine
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Ranked 11th in the nation, UC Irvine held its own at Drake Stadium before eventually falling to No. 14 UCLA in the final minutes.
UCI took a 1-0 lead down to the wire. Cameron Iwasa got high on cross from Gor Kirakosyan off a free kick on the left side of the box. Iwasa put a head on the ball and banked it off the crossbar and down to ruin the scoreless tie in the 71st minute.
Following that shot, the match picked up as UCLA came right down the field and nearly evened it up.
Newcomer Pavle Atanackovic looked to respond putting a hard touch off a bounding ball on target. UCLA keeper Juan Cervantes made a marvelous diving effort to keep it at 1-0.
UCLA (3-1-1) would finally respond in the 83rd minute as Fernando Monge got a head on a Joe Sofia cross which would nick the right post on its way in.
UCLA would put the match away four minutes later as Max Estrada connected with a ball in mid-air and past Michael Breslin for the eventual game-winner.
The squads put together a very entertaining and even match. Both keepers stopped four shots as UCLA had the slight edge in shots taken, 15-13.
For Iwasa, it was his second goal of the season. Kirakosyan added his first assist as he remains the team leader with seven points.
Breslin's four saves give him 16 on the season.
