OMAHA, Neb. — Old Dominion junior Tim Hopkinson scored two goals to lead unbeaten ODU (5-0) past second-ranked Creighton (4-1-1) 2-1 in the first round of the Creighton Soccer Classic. Creighton was an NCAA tournament semifinalist a year ago.
“We started the game with a bit of nerves and conceded an early goal. Our response after we settled down was terrific and we made a statement with a huge win against a great opponent on the road in front of 6800 crazy fans,” head coach Alan Dawson said.
The Bluejays struck first with a goal less than two minutes into the match by senior midfielder Jose Gomez.
The Monarchs came up with the equalizer with 20 minutes left in the half as leading scorer Tim Hopkinson scored on an assist from senior Yannick Smith.
The two teams went into halftime even at 1-1.
In the second half with about 21 minutes remaining, Hopkinson scored his team-best seventh goal in the 71st minute to secure the Monarchs win 2-1.
Creighton outshot ODU 20-18 but the Monarchs had more shots on frame at 12-10. ODU senior goalkeeper Victor Francoz came up with eight saves on the night.
The Monarch’s last win against a top-5 team was Sept. 28, 2010 with a 2-1 victory versus then second-ranked North Carolina.
