Montevallo's balanced attack lifts Falcons to 4-1 upset vs. No. 5 Flagler
MONTEVALLO, Ala. -- Montevallo erased any doubt about its chances against Flagler with a 4-1 convincing upset versus the No. 5 squad on Sunday.
"We put our stamp on the game," Montevallo head coach Ken Hassler said. "I thought our guys played a great game. Flagler is a great team. We were ready to play."
The Falcons (7-3-1) jumped out to a 3-0 lead and didn't look back in the victory against the Saints.
Sophomore Pierre Omanga gave Montevallo a 1-0 lead in the third minute of the contest, catching the Flagler defense off guard with a chip shot over the Saints' goalkeeper for his team-leading ninth goal of the season.
The Falcons pushed their lead to 2-0 following a goal by Pedro Carneiro off an assist from Omanga in the 53rd minute of the match. Junior Jackson Tolleson netted a goal six minutes later off an assist from senior Stefan Vaziri to give Montevallo a 3-0 advantage.
Flagler netted its lone goal in the match on a penalty kick by Joseph Toby in the 72nd minute of the game.
Senior Shane Howard capped the scoring for the Falcons with his goal off an assist from Omanga in the 82nd minute of the match.
Junior goalkeeper Brendan Ledgeway posted three saves in the victory.
