RICHMOND, Va. -- Behind goals by Donnie Smith and Giuseppe Gentile and a solid overall team defensive effort, 13th-ranked Charlotte (7-2-2, A-10: 1-1-0) blanked Richmond (4-7-0, A-10: 0-2-0) 2-0 on the road. The 49ers recorded their fourth shutout of the season.

"We completely dominated the game," Charlotte coach Kevin Langan said. "We did a great job in controlling possession and the run of play. We scored two quality goals. It was a great response by our team after Friday's game. We showed [Sunday] how strong a team that we are. I was also pleased with our defense in shutting out Richmond and limiting them to three shots. It was a total team defensive effort [Sunday] from our strikers and midfielders to our defenders and our goalkeeper."

Smith gave the 49ers the lead for good when he scored off an Anthony Perez assist at the 44:24 mark of the game. Smith's goal was his third of the season and the 17th of his career.

Gentile scored the game's other goal when he put a beautiful assist by Smith into the back of the net at the 85:56 mark of the match. Gentile's goal was his team-leading fourth of the season and the 14th of his career.

Charlotte finished the game with a 19-3 advantage in shots. The 49ers 19 shots marked the fifth time this season that the 49ers have recorded at least 17 shots in a game. Twelve of those 19 shots were on goal. Ten 49ers recorded at least one shot in the game. Smith led the 49ers with four shots. Gentile and Robby Thomas each recorded three shots apiece. Perez and Kyle Parker each tallied two shots apiece.

Before Smith's goal, Perez, Gentile, Parker and Isaac Caughran had scoring chances but their shots were stopped by Richmond's goalkeeper Thomas Hand. In the second half, Smith, Tyler Gibson, and Gentile had scoring chances stopped by Richmond's Hand before Gentile scored the 49ers other goal. With two minutes left in the game, Charlotte's Parker had the 49ers final scoring chance but his shot was stopped by Richmond's Hand.

Charlotte goalkeeper Klay Davis recorded two saves en route to his fourth shutout of the season and the 16th of his career.
