NYIT serves No. 1 LIU Post first conference loss of the season
OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. -- With 12:12 remaining in regulation, sophomore Guillermo Fuentes netted the game-winning goal that would eventually give NYIT a 2-1 victory against No. 1 LIU Post on Saturday at President's Stadium. With the win, the Bears improved to 6-5-2 on the season and 3-2-1 in East Coast Conference play, while the Pioneers faced their first conference loss of the season and dropped to 12-2 and 6-1 in league action.
After a scoreless first half, NYIT was first to get on the scoreboard with a goal by Herve Valcourt at 63:06. His shot came from 18 yards out and bounced off the far post. NYIT claimed a 2-0 advantage when Fuentes scored in the 78th minute. Sophomore Dominic Lovino fed Fuentes, who then went one-on-one with LIU Post keeper Marco Jorgensen.
The Bears defense, led by keeper Liam Waddy, worked as a solid unit to fend off 13 Pioneer attacks in the second half. However, LIU Post found a way past the defense and converted a penalty kick, making the score 2-1. Eirik Bjoernoe took the shot and earned his third goal of the season. The Pioneers tried three more times to equalize the score but were not successful.
Waddy earned the win to improve to 5-4-1 on the season. He made five saves in the matchup. Jorgensen (11-1) made seven saves in the loss.
LIU Post had a slight shots advantage against NYIT (18-15) while a total of 37 fouls were called.
