AUSTIN, Texas – Incarnate Word saw its 12-game unbeaten streak come to an end when St. Edward’s grabbed a 3-1 victory on Wednesday.

The Hilltoppers (11-3-3) scored all three of their goals in the first 23 minutes of the contest. Two of the scores came on penalty kicks from James Martin at 9:33 and 22:32. Sandwiched between the two penalty kicks was a point-blank header by Kyle Pujats.

The Cardinals (11-3-1) had a chance to get back into the game less than two minutes after the first goal by Martin. UIW drew a foul on St. Edward’s in the box leading to a penalty kick from Vincent Bailey that was saved by Hilltopper goalkeeper John Kaschak at 11:10. It was the second game in a row that the Cardinals had a penalty kick saved.

The Cardinals trailed 3-0 heading into halftime, but came out of the break pushing to score a goal. Kaschak made a pair of saves in the first five minutes of the half, but could not stop Abraham Campos’ header off a pass from Alex de la Garza at 54:19. After the goal, the Cardinals only managed two more shots the rest of the game.

Overall, the Cardinals outshot the Hilltoppers 19-10 and earned one more corner kick than St. Edward’s. Kaschak picked up the win after making eight saves while Jarred Kahan was hit with the loss despite making three saves.
