SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Mississippi College played its first NCAA tournament game and picked up a win with a 1-0 victory against Whitworth on Saturday at Paul McGinlay Soccer Field.
The two teams went into the intermission in a scoreless tie as neither squad could create many chances. The Choctaws (13-5-2) had three shots with just one on goal, while the Pirates (13-3-3) only had two shots.
In the second half, senior Diego Ayala scored the lone goal of the night on a header off a throw-in by junior Wesley Noble. Junior Harrison Russell flicked the ball into the box and Ayala finished with his fourth goal of the season.
The Pirates and Choctaws each finished the match with nine shots, with Whitworth putting four on goal. MC had three shots on goal.
Choctaw goalkeeper Robert Jackson made three saves in the match, including one on a breakaway in the final five minutes. Kyle Novak made two saves and gave up his sixth goal of the season in the loss.
The Choctaws will move on to play on Saturday.
