ONEONTA, N.Y. – Junior midfielder Dan Mendoza scored in the 69th minute which turned out to get the difference as Montclair State advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship with a 2-1 victory against Salve Regina at Oneonta State on Saturday.
Freshman Lucas Terci had a goal for the Red Hawks (18-2). The Red Hawks took 13 of the first 14 shots in the contest, but were unable to come away with any scoring until Terci netted his sixth goal of the season at 24:56 of the half. Sophomore Brian Cullen fed Terci who blasted a shot from 25 yards out into the upper right corner for the goals as Montclair State led 1-0.
That lead would hold through halftime and into the first 15 minutes of the second half when Salve Regina tied the game up. Issa Dmirgioglu crossed a pass to Alex Wasilewski, who deposited the feed into the net making it 1-1 with 29:17 remaining.
It wouldn’t stay tied for long as Mendoza put the Red Hawks up eight minutes later finishing off a feed from Mike Horan at 68:06 putting MSU back in front, 2-1. It was Mendoza’s 10th goal of the season.
Salve Regina would get a few chances to tie the game, none better than the final shot of the contest. Bobby Ernst ripped a ball that Red Hawks keeper Anthony Rogic snared preserving the win for Montclair State and sending MSU into the next round.
Rogic finished with three saves for Montclair State, which outshot the Seahawks (16-6-1), 16-8. Each team had three corner kicks.
