DUBUQUE, Iowa — Loras held on to defeat Wheaton (Ill.) 2-1 Saturday and is the first team to advance to the semifinals of the NCAA tournament.
Loras got off to a fast start, with sophomore Johnny Rummelhart capitalizing on an early corner kick. Rummelhart won a header and knocked it into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Following a throw in from Loras’ Sam Koenig, senior Forrest Olson and freshman JoJo Schmidt applied pressure in the corner, forced the ball to Schmidt who sent it to the far post where junior Erik Berkowitz headed the cross past Wheaton goalkeeper Ryan Seager.
Wheaton cut the lead in half in the 88th minute, but could not muster any more offense. A late free kick in the closing seconds was sent over the crossbar.
Loras advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2008.
