Portland, Ore. -
The University of Portland is ranked No. 5 in the 2010 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Preseason Women's Soccer Poll, released on Tuesday. The Pilots will play eight teams among the initial top 25 listing, including three teams in the top 10.

Portland returns eight starters and 18 letterwinners from a team that went 21-2-0 a year ago and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the sixth consecutive season. The Pilots, picked to win the West Coast Conference for the fourth consecutive year, will play one of the nation's most difficult schedules as evidenced by the preseason poll.

Among the notable 2010 UP opponents is Stanford, who reached the NCAA finals last year and is ranked No. 2. Texas A&M, Portland's lone regular season loss last year, checks in at No. 8, while long-time WCC rival Santa Clara is No. 9.

Other key ranked opponents include No. 13 Penn State, No. 14 California, No. 18 Rutgers, No. 20 Wisconsin and No. 22 Oklahoma State. Regular Portland opponents San Diego and Washington are also receiving votes.

Portland kicks off the 2010 season on Friday, Aug. 20 as crosstown rival Portland State visits Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex.  Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and tickets are available through Ticketmaster at (800) 745-3000, online at ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster outlets; as well as in-person at the Pilot Box Office (11am-5pm, M-F).
