LOS ANGELES - With six first-half goals, including two in the first 10 minutes, the third-ranked UCLA women's soccer team cruised in its 2010 season opener on Sunday, posting a 7-0 victory over visiting Cal Poly at the North Athletic Field.
Fresh off an outstanding summer with the Under-20 U.S. National Team, forward Sydney Leroux hit her stride on Sunday, notching a hat trick in just the first half. Her goals came in the 21st, 39th and 41st minutes. She wasn't done, however, as she scored again in the 84th minute to cap UCLA's 7-0 win. It marks the second four-goal performance of her career, as she duplicated that feat in the team's 7-1 win over Boise State in the first round of last year's NCAA Tournament.
Zakiya Bywaters and Dana Wall got things started for the Bruins on Sunday, as each player had a goal in the first 10 minutes. Bywaters, who scored in the eighth minute, followed in a shot by Wall that caromed off the post and back into play. Wall scored a goal of her own less than two minutes later on a breakaway.
Senior Lauren Barnes also notched a goal in the first half, converting a free kick in the 44th minute.
Junior Chante' Sandiford got the start in goal for the Bruins, playing the first 73 minutes before being subbed out for Yiana Dimmitt. Sandiford faced just two shots, making one save. UCLA outshot Cal Poly, 29-2 on the day.
Head coach Jillian Ellis was able to work in a total of 21 players into Sunday's match, including newcomers Jenna Richmond, Charney
Burk, Chelsea Braun and Ariana Martinez. Richmond assisted on Leroux's third goal.
UCLA heads to the Wisconsin Tournament next week, facing Wisconsin on Friday night and Northwestern on Sunday.
