Nebraska-Omaha ended Truman State Universitys unbeaten season on Sunday afternoon in sudden fashion. The Mavericks (18-3-2) advanced on a goal by Anne Willrett 3:18 seconds into overtime to hand the number one seed, Bulldogs (19-1-2) their first loss of the season.
Willrett picked up the loose ball just inside the 18-yard line and found the far left post for the game winner. The goal was unassisted.
UNO scored first in the contest on a crossing pass from Ali Portell to Christen Boeckel that found the top right corner of the goal. Truman responded in the second half with a goal by Robyn Mortenson at the top of the 18-yard box. The ball came rebounded out to Mortenson off a free kick and she was able to tie the game at one apiece.
Following that play, Truman had three chances off corner kicks to take the lead, the first was a header that just missed the top of the net from Anna Sonderman, the next two were saved by Maverick keeper Amy Price off the head of Melissa Snodgrass.
Price and Truman keeper Lauren Davis each made four saves in the game.
Nebraska-Omaha advances to the quarterfinal round for the third year in a row. They will take on the winner of the Great Lakes region championship between Ashland (Ohio) and Wisconsin-Parkside.
