Washington University advanced past Macalester College 5-4 on penalty kicks Saturday afternoon in NCAA Division III women's soccer Sectional round action on East Athletic Field. The Bears (17-2-1) will face host #6 Puget Sound in the Sectional Final Sunday at 1:00pm. For Macalester the season ends at 18-3-1.
The two teams battled to a 0-0 draw after 120 minutes, with each having several quality opportunities to put the match away. Macalester hit the post just over twenty minutes into the second half, while Washington University was thwarted twice on near breakaway chances.
Overall the stats reflected the close nature of the game, with the teams nearly equal in all statistical facets of the game. Shots favored Macalester 14-12, corners were even at five apiece, and fouls favored Washington University 12-10.
Charlotte Felber made four saves in the run of play for the Bears, saving her biggest for the fifth and final shooter for Macalester. Diving to her left Felber touched the ball wide of the post, punching her teams' ticket to the Sectional Final.
Louisa Bigelow made six saves in the net for the Scots in the loss.
Puget Sound and Washington University will meet for the first time in program history tomorrow at 1:00pm for the right to advance to the Division III Women's Soccer Final Four.
