WICHITA FALLS, Texas - The #8 nationally ranked Adelphi University women's soccer team defeated #7 Carson-Newman College, 2-1, to advance to the NCAA Division II National Championship game. The Panthers (20-3-1) will face the winner of the Metro State/Nebraska-Omaha contest on Saturday at 1:00 pm (CST).

Senior Josephine Coiro (West Babylon, N.Y.) gave the Panthers an early lead scoring on rebounded corner kick in the 15th minute of play. Junior Shannon McEntee (Valley Stream, N.Y.) kicked the corner as the ball rebounded into open field. Coiro was the first player to respond, taking the shot on an open net and past the arms a diving Melissa Terrell (Medina, OH) at 14:55.

The Lady Eagles seemed to intensify play throughout the remainder of the first half, but were unable to connect with the back of net.

Carson-Newman (19-3-2) continued strong play in the second half and finally knotted the score at 1-1 in the 54th minute off a goal by sophomore Heather Terrell (Medina, OH), her first of the season.

The Panthers rallied back, controlling the ball for the remainder of the half. On the game, Adelphi held a 20-11 advantage on shots. Sophomore Lauren Lopez (Farmingville, N.Y.) notched the winning goal at 69:04. A corner kick by McEntee rebounded off the crossbar. Lopez managed to gain the advantage through traffic, giving Adelphi a 2-1 lead.

"The team played very well," Head Coach Rich Ilsley said. "I was kind of worried in the first half when we squandered so many big chances. I believe we should have easily had four or five goals. Our defense did an excellent job as well. I am very proud of the team."

Freshman Christine Conway (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) had four saves in goal for Adelphi. M. Terrell had four stops for Carson-Newman as well.

This marks Adelphi's first appearance in the championship round since 1992. Then, the Panthers narrowly missed a national title falling to Barry University, 3-2.
