ST. PAUL, Minn. -- No. 25-ranked Macalester knocked off defending NCAA Division III national champion Wheaton (Ill.) on Sept. 16, defeating the No. 1-ranked Thunder 2-1 to put an end to Wheaton's 29-game winning streak. Wheaton's winning streak was the third longest in NCAA Division III women's soccer history.

Meghan Garrity scored one of Macalester's two goals on Sept. 16. (Macalester)
Meghan Garrity (So., Walled Lake, Mich. / Marian) and Annie Borton (Jr, Berkeley, Calif.) scored Macalester's goals, Garrity in the first half on a Meghan Leahey (Sr., Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata) assist and the All-American Borton with the game-winner on a header off a cross from teammate Katie Pastorius (Sr., Arden Hills, Minn. / Mounds View) in the 82nd minute.

Wheaton started off with strong pressure against the Mac defense but couldn't get on the board. The Scots managed on only score on the first half on a nice crossing pass from Leahey to Garrity in the 15 th minute.

Macalester played a stronger second half than first half as its confidence started to build, but a sudden Wheaton goal by Mary Doleshal on a nice left-footed shot from about 35 yards out in the 77th minute tied things up and had the game headed into an apparent overtime.

However, just five minutes after the Wheaton goal, Pastorius beat her defender down the left sideline. When the defender fell, she had time to deliver a perfect cross to Borton, who headed the game-winning goal past the keeper.

Wheaton out-shot the Scots 11-8 and had a 7-6 corner kick advantage. The Scots received an excellent game from goalkeeper Louisa Bigelow (Sr., Chicago, Ill. / Evanston Township), who registered four saves and stepped in front of numerous crossing passes.

The Scots are off for a week, returning to action next Friday (Sept. 23) at home against Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
