West Windsor, NJ& The College of New Jersey womens soccer team collected a 1-0 win over Stevens Institute of Technology while Denison University advanced in a penalty kicks over Otterbein College in the sectionals of the 2005 NCAA Division III Womens Soccer Championships at Mercer County Community College in West Windsor, New Jersey on Saturday. TCNJ and Denison will meet on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. with the winner advancing to next weeks National semifinals.
After playing to a scoreless overtime tie, Denison University advanced to the sectional championship game with a 4-3 advantage in penalty kicks over Otterbein College. Denison is now 16-3-4, while Otterbeins season ends at 20-1-1.
Saturdays NCAA contest marked the second meeting of these two teams as Denison beat Otterbein 2-1 on September 10, marking the only loss on the Cardinals 2005 season.
In the penalty kick shootout, the first three players who shot for both teams scored making the score 3-3 before a series of missed attempts.
Otterbeins starting keeper, senior goalie Katie Chrien (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield) went down in the match and was replaced in the action by junior Annelise Erpenbeck (Lewis Center, OH/Olentangy) came in played the remainder of the game and the penalty kick session. Denisons senior Colleen Wirtz (Westerville, OH/St. Francis De Sales) provided the penalty kick goal to the left side that propelled her team to the next round as she put the ball past Erpenbeck.
On the game, Denisons sophomore Liz Gillette (Mentor, OH/Notre Dame Cathedral) made three saves in the shutout performance, while Chrien had no saves in 37:48 on play. Erpenbeck had one save in 72:12 for the Cardinals.
