Tufts 5, Wheaton (Mass.) 2

Nov. 19, 2005

Tufts senior Ariel Samuelson (Newton, MA) scored two goals to lead a second half charge that resulted in five unanswered goals for the Jumbos en route to a 5-2 victory over Wheaton College in NCAA sectional action at Oneonta State. The win for Tufts (15-3-1) advanced them into tomorrow's sectional final against host Oneonta State beginning at 1:00 p.m. Tomorrow's winner will advance to the national championship final four next weekend in Greensboro.

The opening half was all Wheaton, who took a 2-0 lead into halftime. The Lyons generated multiple opportunities and could have led by more. "We missed a chance to go up 3-0 early in the second half," said Wheaton coach Luis Reis. "The second half for Tufts was the most explosive half I've seen in my nine years of coaching. My hat goes off to them. I wish them good luck tomorrow."

The opening goal for Wheaton came in the 21st minute of play unassisted.. Sophomore Katelyn Brack (Lake Oswego, OR) found herself with the ball at the top of the box and rocketed a shot that the Tufts keeper couldn't get to. The Lyons added a second unassisted goal 10 minutes later to take command of the game. Freshman Angelamaria Viscomi (Newton, MA) collected a loose ball that was a clearing attempt by Tufts. She fired a shot that went past the out stretched arms of the Jumbos' keeper.

"We were excited to be ahead 2-0," said senior Teresa Lebel (Middleton, MA). "The momentum definitely shifted when they tied the score at 2-2. They just kept attacking."

The first goal for Tufts came just six minutes into the second half and cut the lead to 2-1. Senior Lydia Claudio (Woburn, MA) was able to get her head on a direct kick sent in by sophomore Jessie Wagner (Sudbury, MA). Claudio redirected the ball enough to get it by the Wheaton keeper to the right side of the goal.

"We talked at halftime about not quitting," said Tufts coach Martha Whiting. "We had been in this situation before and we'd been able to come back. The team trusted each other enough to stay in."

The tying goal for the Jumbos came in the 60th minute on a bang-bang play. Samuelson crossed a ball from the left flank that made it to the box.. Sophomore Martha Furtek (East Falmouth, MA) out raced a Wheaton defender and caught the Lyons' keeper by surprise to redirect the cross into the left corner.

"We felt that our forwards were faster than their backs," said Furtek. "When we tied the game we knew we could get another one."

Speed played a factor in the eventual game-winner by Samuelson in the 72nd minute. Samuelson was able to beat the Wheaton defense on a through ball from Furtek to go one-on-one with the keeper. She shot a ball that sailed over the head of Stacey Kronenberg (Belchertown, NY). Kronenberg played 85 minutes and finished with seven saves.

The flood gates were open in the 81st minute when the Jumbos added its fourth goal by sophomore Lauren Fedore (East Lansing, MI). She was a trailer on a shot that was saved by Kronenberg, but because she was out of position, Fedore was able to float a ball over a crowd of players to the back of the goal.

Samuelson added the final goal for Tufts just two minutes later when she was sent in behind the Wheaton defense on a cross from the right flank by Claudio.

"I didn't want my last game to be here, today," said Samuelson. We changed our style and started attacking from the outside in. We didn't have any luck penetrating the middle of their defense in the first half."

In looking ahead to tomorrow's sectional final with Oneonta coach Whiting said, "We just played an extremely tough game. We are going to enjoy this one for a little while before turning our focus to the challenge of tomorrow's game. We are going to have another tough game on Sunday."
