REDLANDS- Laura Hagen overpowered the UC Santa Cruz back line, scoring two goals and notching one assist for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges in a 4-0 thrashing of the Banana Slugs in the second round of the NCAA Championships on Sunday at Farquhar Field on the campus of the University of Redlands.

Hagen drove a bomb from the left wing past UC Santa Cruz goalkeeper Elli Vermillion in the 7th minute, setting the tone early in favor of the Athenas. Sarah Blavet nabbed the assist on the play.

At the 25-minute mark, Amanda Drasny took a free kick and Laura Hagen floated a short looping ball to Giselle Galanto who then headed a ball past Vermillion for the match's second goal.

Just 1:53 into the second half, Hagen buried her 16h goal of the season, and Nicole Sady-Kennedy put the nail in the coffin with an unassisted score at the 53:10 mark.

Neither Athena keeper saw much action in goal. Camila Friedman-Gerlicz started the match and stopped one shot on frame while Lindsay Delp took over late in the second half and did not face any shots on target.

For the Slugs, Vermillion notched one save while her replacement, Janneke Lang, recorded three stops. Both keepers surrendered two goals apiece.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps outshot UC Santa Cruz 19-5 and the Banana Slugs took two shots on goal to the Athenas' eight.

UC Santa Cruz (12-7) finishes the season having advanced past the first round of the NCAA Championships. Last night, the Slugs downed the No. 20 University of Redlands by a 1-0 final.

With the win, the Athenas (12-8-2) face Carleton College (MN) in the sectional round of the NCAA playoffs at Wheaton College (IL) next weekend. In the first round, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tied Hardin-Simmons University (TX) and advanced on penalty kicks 5-4
