RICHARDSON , Texas – West Texas A&M is the favorite to win the Lone Star Conference women’s soccer championship according to the league’s 2009 preseason poll released Thursday.

WTAMU won the regular season title and its second straight and fifth overall championship in 2008.  The Lady Buffs hosted the South Central Regional after posting a 16-4-1 overall and 8-2 league mark.

WTAMU collected 14 first-place votes among the 28 ballots that were cast by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors and various media representatives.  The Lady Buffs totaled 286 points in the preseason poll to finish in front of its conference opponents.

Texas A&M-Commerce was a close second with 11 first-place nods and 275 points, while Central Oklahoma was third with 247 including three first-place votes and Midwestern State was fourth with 240.

Abilene Christian finished fifth with 191, followed by Angelo State 159, Northeastern State 134, Texas Woman’s 133, Eastern New Mexico 86, East Central 64 and Southwestern Oklahoma 33.

The 2009 soccer season starts on the pitch in late August.  Each of the 11 LSC teams will play the other once during the regular season, with the results of those contests to be used in determining the seeds for a six-team postseason conference tournament.  This year’s tournament will be hosted by the No. 1 seed on Nov. 5-6-8, 2009.
