LA JOLLA, Calif. - Molly Downtain converted the winning penalty kick Thursday, helping Chico State advance in the NCAA Division II women's soccer tournament after a 0-0 tie against defending national champion Seattle Pacific at Triton Stadium.

The Falcons (16-3-2) were eliminated from the playoffs despite an 18-8 advantage in shots, including 6-0 in the two 10-minute overtime sessions.

The Wildcats (8-5-9) won the shootout 4-3. SPU won the coin toss and elected to kick first in the five-round shootout.

Sophomore Brandi Hamre attempted SPU's second penalty kick and sent it wide right. Goalkeeper Maddie Dickinson evened the score for the Falcons, diving to her left to stop Chico's third try, by Shelby Dunlap.

In the fifth round, SPU freshman Taylor Sawyer's shot carried over the crossbar. That set up Downtain's winning kick that went into the left side of the goal while Dickinson dove right.

It was just the third overtime game of the year for SPU, while the Wildcats played their 10th. Chico set an NCAA record with its ninth tie of the season.

The Falcons had an 8-3 shot advantage in the first half, but just one of the attempts was on frame. Hamre's low 20-yard shot forced CSU goalkeeper Natalie Bensky to fall on the ball in the center of the goal for the save.

Chico's most dangerous opportunity came in the 70th minute when Kasey Wall headed a corner kick to the left post that an SPU defender cleared off the line.

SPU had two great opportunities during overtime. Megan Lindsay hit a 25-yard drive five minutes into the first overtime that Bensky was barely able to tip over the crossbar.

Senior Jocelyn Charette sent a hard shot in 107th minute that Chico defender Sarah Steele stopped near the goal line.

The Falcons won five playoff games last season, capped by a 1-0 double-overtime triumph over West Florida in the championship game on Dec. 6 in Tampa, Fla.
