GRAND RAPIDS, MI—The Calvin women’s soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA III Tournament with an impressive 4-0 victory over Washington and Jefferson (PA) Friday afternoon in a first round tournament game played at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.

Junior forward Carly Prins headed in a pair of goals - both off of corner kick plays to lead the Knights who are making their fifth consecutive appearance in the NCAA III Tournament.

Freshmen Francesca Smith and Liz Cancel also scored goals for the Knights with Smith scoring in the 70th minute and Cancel in the 82nd minute of play.

Prins put Calvin on the board just 6:17 into the match, heading in a corner kick from junior teammate Lauren Heyboer.

Calvin dominated the rest of the first half but did not score again until Smith collected a corner kick from junior Mindy Capisciolto in the 70th minute and ripped a shot just inside the far left post. Four minutes later, Prins headed in a blast into the top right shelf of the Washington and Jefferson net off a perfect serve from Heyboer on a corner kick.

Cancel closed out the scoring on an unassisted breakaway goal with just over eight minutes remaining.

Calvin will now face Wittenberg (12-4-5), a 3-1 winner over Ohio Northern on Friday afternoon, in a second round game on Saturday at Calvin’s Zuidema Field at 1:00 p.m.

Calvin outshot Washington and Jefferson (12-7-2) 30-3 on Friday with senior goalkeeper Kayla Sulzer collecting three saves for the Knights.

Saturday’s Calvin/Wittenberg game will feature a rematch of the 2007 NCAA III Regional final which concluded in a 0-0 tie but saw Wittenberg advance by way of a penalty kick shootout.
