Cal State Dominguez Hills Takes Down West Florida in PKs
Dec. 3, 2009
TAMPA, Fl. - The bigger they are, the harder they fall. This adage was never more evident than tonight as the 15th-ranked Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team toppled the top-ranked and formerly undefeated team in the nation in West Florida in a 4-1 penalty kick win to advance to Saturday afternoon's NCAA Championship game against 3rd-ranked Grand Valley State, a 3-2 overtime winner over 2nd-ranked St. Rose in the first national semifinal.
Junior Melissa Livergood again clinched the PK win after clinching a 3-1 PK win over UC San Diego to help the Toros claim the West Region Title on November 22. With the win, the 16-8-3 Toros look to take home their first NCAA Championship since the 1991 campaign.
Facing a 1-0 deficit with less than two minutes in the first half, Yadira Gomez collected a loose ball following a Toro corner kick to give CSUDH the edge it desperately needed in the semifinal game of the 2009 NCAA Division II Soccer Championships.
The Toros saw two opportunities to score let slip early in the half, both taken by Jessica Murphy from the top of the box.
The first came at 14 minutes in as Murphy bested her defenders from nearly midfield, sending her shot narrowly close to the inside top edge of frame after West Florida's Courtney Jones managed to place a few fingers on the ball.
The second attempt, 18 minutes later, again resulted in a Jones save, this time forcing Jones to come out to defend her post.
Only a few minutes later, the Argonauts Shakira Duncan took a feed from Shaneka Gordon at the top of the box and slid her ball through the defensive scrum, past a diving Alyssa Congdon.
Looking to enter the half down by one, Gomez made the critical play, collecting a loose ball on the goal-line itself following a Brooke Thompson corner kick to set the stage for the shootout.
