DURANGO, Colo. - Coming off of a 2-0 win over New Mexico Highlands on Friday, the Rangers, No. 23, defeated No. 3 Fort Lewis College in Durango on Sunday to claim the RMAC Championship Title and gain an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament next week. Four Rangers were named to the RMAC Championships All-Tournament team with CC Rinehart being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Fort Lewis took an early lead over Regis just over seven minutes into play when Hayley Hollenga scored her 12th goal of the season. She was assisted by Lauren Riley on the play. This lead only lasted for about seven minutes when the Rangers tied the score at one.
Meghan Stuart scored her fifth goal of the season and the first of the game for Regis.
The teams broke at the half with the tie scored at one. Shots were evenly matched in the first half as Regis took six shots to FLC's five.
About 15 and a half minutes into the second half, Kelsey Froehlich took a shot that veered wide left. She was fouled on the play and posted up to take a penalty shot for the Rangers. This shot made it past Christine Schmelzle and into the back of the Skyhawks net to put Regis up 2-1.
Fort Lewis was unable to cut their one goal deficit resulting in a Ranger victory and an RMAC Championship title for Regis, their first since the 2003 team beat Mesa State 4-1 in the championship game.
The Rangers outshot the Skyhawks 12 to eight in the game and put five shots on goal.
Named to the RMAC Championships All-Tournament team were sophomore Taylor White, Stuart, freshman Ellen Augsburger, and Rinehart.
