ONEONTA, N.Y. - Senior Bridget Varin scored four minutes into the match and Rochester held on for a 1-0 first round NCAA Division III soccer playoff win over Western Connecticut State University on Friday.
The win puts Rochester into the second round of the tournament for the second consecutive year. The Yellowjackets will play host SUNY Oneonta which defeated Roger Williams College, 3-0, in Friday's first game. The Rochester-Oneonta game will kick off at 1 pm Saturday.
Western Connecticut State earned its playoff berth by winning the Little East Conference Tournament last weekend. The Colonials defeated Keene State, 1-0, and UMass-Boston, 1-0. Both games were played on WCSU's home field. The Colonials have brought a 15-4-1 record and a 13-match unbeaten streak into the game against Rochester. In that streak, WCSU had shut out every opponent. The only 'blemish' on the record was a 0-0 double overtime tie against the University of Scranton on October 13.
Varin's goal was created by Brittany Huber. She crossed the ball into the box and Varin lined a shot into the corner at 3:35.
Huber nearly doubled the lead in the 28th minute. She hit the post with a shot then fired the rebound only to see WCSU goalkeeper Caitlin Avery make a save.
As WCSU stepped up the pressure in the last 10 minutes, the Yellowjacket defense blocked a shot by Lauren Francisco and saw Jillian Duran fire over the crossbar. Matthews attempted a header from a long throw-in as the clock moved below 10 seconds left. It bounced off a Rochester defender for a corner kick but time expired before the corner could be put into play.
Rochester improves to 12-4-3 overall. Western Conneticut is 15-5-1.
