The University of Redlands women's soccer team advances to the second round of the NCAA Division III Championship after defeating regional-rival Chapman University by a score of 2-1 on Thursday evening in the city of Orange. With tonight's victory, the Bulldogs have edged the Panthers in all three NCAA postseason meetings, dating back to 2001.
Junior forward Fionna Connolly (Salem, OR) netted both scores for Redlands, giving her four goals in the last three games.
The Bulldogs struck first when Connolly beat Panther goalkeeper sophomore Rissa Anderson on a one-on-one opportunity in the 35th minute. Sophomore midfielder Samantha Rivera (Thousand Oaks, CA) earned her second assist of the year as her pass led Connolly beyond the Chapman defenders for the score.
Chapman quickly responded, evening the score less than six minutes later. Senior midfielder Bridget Thompson provided the lone goal for the Panthers as she connected on a pass from freshman forward Val Sobol, who redirected a corner kick by sophomore Aimee Evans.
At the 70:58 mark, Connolly came through once again for Redlands, picking up her second netter of the night and 11th goal of the season. Her persistence continued to pay off as she capitalized on her own rebounded shot.
Led by sophomore goalkeeper Rachel Foreman (San Jose, CA), the Bulldog defense kept the Panthers in check, allowing only seven total shots and one goal in 90 minutes.
The Bulldogs (11-9) head to Thousand Oaks on Saturday for a 1 p.m. showdown against their familiar foes at Cal Lutheran University in the teams' fourth meeting of the season. The Regals hold a slight 2-1 advantage in the series, having won the first two matches during the regular season. However, Redlands recently upended the Regals by a score of 2-0 in the semi-final of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Postseason Tournament on Nov. 3.
