The #5 Grand Valley State women's soccer team defeated #3 Fort Lewis 5-0 on Sunday afternoon (Nov. 21) to advance to the NCAA Division II National Semifinals. The Lakers recorded their 19th shutout with the win, which ties a school record and the tough GVSU defense played its entire home schedule without giving up a goal. Grand Valley State will travel to Louisville, Ky. to play Florida Tech on Thursday (Dec. 2) at the NCAA Division II Fall Festival.

The Lakers recorded two goals in the first half, the first during the 25th minute. Senior midfielder Kristen Eible got GVSU on the scoreboard after she headed the ball in the back off the net off of an Erin Mruz corner kick. Just six minutes later at 31:53 Mruz put the Lakers up 2-0 after Ashley Botts and Taylor Callen set Mruz up for a shot 17 yards out. The goal recorded Mruz's 11th goal on the year and gave Grand Valley State a 2-0 lead a halftime.

During the second half of action, Botts notched her 12th goal of the season after Jaleen Dingledine crossed the ball over from the right side. Botts took a header that landed in the bottom left corner of the net during the 54th minute. The Lakers added their fifth goal of the match at the 68:09 mark after a Fort Lewis foul. Alyssa Mira passed the ball to Eible who found junior defender Kayla Klosterman. Klosterman headed the ball in sealing a 5-0 victory for Grand Valley State.

The Lakers dominated offensively outshooting the Skyhawks by a 24-4 advantage, including a 15-2 margin in shots on goal. Goalkeeper Chelsea Parise notched her 15th shutout on the year, which ties a single season school record for shutouts in a year.

GVSU advances its record to 20-1-2 in overall play this year, while Fort Lewis ends its season with an 18-3-2 overall record.
