No. 2 West Chester plays to draw
No. 22 Slippery Rock tied score in game’s final 36 seconds
SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. -- No. 22 Slippery Rock played to a 1-1 double overtime draw against No. 2 West Chester in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference action at N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
West Chester (3-0-1, 1-0-1 PSAC) scored in the 67th minute and appeared to have the game in hand, but Stephanie Buckenheimer converted off a pass from Shelby Ward with just 36 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 1-1 and send it to overtime.
Both teams had chances in the extra time with Slippery Rock (2-1-1, 1-0-1 PSAC) registering two shots on goal in the first 10 minute session and the Golden Rams matching that figure in the second session.
The game was even in nearly every statistical category as both teams traded momentum throughout. Slippery Rock finished with a 14-13 advantage in total shots, while West Chester managed an 8-6 edge in shots on goal and a 6-4 margin in corner kicks.
Marie D’Angelo scored the game’s first goal for West Chester in the 67th minute, converting on a crossing pass from Rachel Miller.
The Golden Rams held Slippery Rock to just two total shots in the second half, but Buckenheimer made the second of those shots count when she netted the tying goal with 36 seconds left, scoring into the left corner of goal after taking a pass from a streaking Ward.
West Chester keeper Shannon Fedyk made two saves in the first overtime and Rock keeper Lisa Rodgers matched her in the second overtime to preserve the tie.
Katie Kolodka also came up big for The Rock defense, kicking away a shot off a corner kick in the 64th minute. West Chester’s Tara Malkiewicz hit a hard low shot to the right post, where Kolodka kicked the ball off the goal line to keep the game scoreless at that point.
