Freshmen lead UCLA to victory
No. 2 Bruins finish the non-conference season undefeated
LOS ANGELES -- No. 2 UCLA notched its seventh victory of the season on Saturday, scoring three unanswered second-half goals in a 3-1 win against Loyola Marymount before 437 fans at LMU's Sullivan Field.
Following a scoreless first half, LMU (6-2-1) got on the board when Tawni Martino notched her third goal of the season in the 59th minute.
UCLA, however, answered less than 10 minutes later when freshman Samantha Mewis headed in a Chelsea Cline corner kick at the 66:50 mark. It would spark an offensive explosion for the Bruins, who would score two more goals before the half ended.
Freshman Kylie McCarthy punched in her first goal of the year in the 76th minute, followed by another strike by Mewis, her third of the year, just over three minutes later.
UCLA (7-0-1) outshot LMU 21-8. Chante' Sandiford picked up the win in goal for the Bruins, improving to 3-0 on the year. Freshman Katelyn Rowland played the entire first half in goal before Sandiford took over the second half.
Brittany Jagger played the entire 90 minutes in goal for LMU, making a match-high 13 saves.
