No. 4 UCSD plows ahead for win
Roundup: Pair of early goals leads No. 3 Quincy to victory
CARSON, Calif. -- No. 4 UC San Diego ended its seven-match road trip to start the 2011 season on a high note, taking down Cal State Dominguez Hills 1-0 on Friday evening in California Collegiate Athletic Association play at the Home Depot Center Main Stadium.
UCSD will enter its first home match on Sunday with a 5-0-2 overall record and a 4-0-1 conference clip. CSUDH drops to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA.
"Up to this point we've been playing well, we just need to keep on doing that," said UCSD head coach Brian McManus. "Hopefully we get started on the right foot Sunday to settle down and win some home games."
Ellen Wilson scored on a corner kick off a service from Hayley Johnson in the 12th minute to make the difference in the match. Johnson sent a high, curling ball into the mixer and Wilson beat the CSUDH goalkeeper to the ball before heading it in. The assist marked Johnson's fifth off a corner kick this season.
No. 3 Quincy 2, Saint Joseph's 0
RENSSELAER, Ind. -- A pair of early goals helped No. 3 Quincy to a 2-0 road win against Saint Joseph's College. The Lady Hawks scored the game's only goals in the first 10-minutes of the game before securing the win with their fifth shutout of the season.
Quincy wasted no time in grabbing the lead as Aimee Ubriaco put the Lady Hawks on the board just 4:46 into the game. Natalie Kuhlenberg took the throw-in and sent the ball over to Aimee Ubriaco. Ubriaco then found the corner of the net for her team leading fourth goal of the season. Just five minutes later the Lady Hawks added an insurance goal when Erin Thomas scored.
Jaclyn Mastroianni started the play by racing down towards the goal line. She then stopped short and cut back into the box, crossing the ball over to an open Thomas who unleashed a one-time shot that beat the Puma keeper for a goal.
