Roundup: No. 1 Florida Tech edges Division I Costal Carolina
INDIANAPOLIS -- A rainy day didn't deter Indianapolis as staunch defense and a goal in the 65th minute lifted the Greyhounds to a 1-0 upset win against No. 3 Quincy Sunday.
Nicole Duncan tallied the game-winner in the 65th minute, firing the ball in from about 15 yards, past the pulled-out Quincy keeper. Shelby Spinelli led the play with a ball through the middle to Duncan, for her team-leading fourth score of the year.
Shae Morris earned the shutout victory, making four saves in her 90 minutes in the net for the Greyhounds. The shutout is Morris' fifth of the year.
No. 1 Florida Tech 1, Coastal Carolina 0
CONWAY, S.C. -- Brittany Comeau’s first collegiate goal in the 44th minute guided No. 1 Florida Tech (6-1) to a 1-0 victory against Division I Coastal Carolina (0-8-1) Sunday afternoon at the CCU Soccer Field.
The win was the Panthers’ second against a Division I opponent in their nine-year history. Their first came Oct. 3, 2005, when they defeated North Florida 2-0 at Rick Stottler Field.
Chelsea Pushman helped set up the scoring sequence with a blast on net that was initially saved by Chanticleer goalkeeper Saundra Baron. Baron, however, was unable to corral the ball, enabling Comeau to bury it for the eventual game-winner.
No. 4 UC San Diego 4, Cal State San Bernardino 0
LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Sarah McTigue scored twice and Hayley Johnson added two assists as No. 4 UC San Diego team rolled past Cal State San Bernardino 4-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play on Sunday afternoon at Triton Soccer Field.
The Tritons were in control of the action from the start, firing off three shots within the first four minutes of the match. Gabi Hernandez earned UCSD's first goal in the 13th minute as she shouldered a defender off a ball trickling out of bounds at the end line and threaded a pass to the penalty spot. McTigue ran onto it and cracked a shot one-time squarely into the middle of the net.
Johnson passed the ball to her right to Lindsay Mills, who then took a touch and pounded-in a right-footed blast off Mallick's gloves to make it 2-0. The Tritons made it 3-0 less than 20 minutes into the second half.
Taryn Bales scored the first goal of her Triton career in the 75th minute for UCSD's final goal. Bales collected a through-ball from Shelby Wong behind the Coyote back line, putting her one-on-one with Mallick and she pushed the ball past the keeper to her left.
