Cobbers convert all three penalty attempts to move on
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. -- Puget Sound saw its season come to an end on Saturday in penalty kicks after playing Concordia-Moorehead to a 1-1 draw. The Cobbers (12-3-6) advanced by a 3-1 decision in PKs.
“The whole match was an even battle,” Puget Sound head coach Randy Hanson said. “The first few minutes was a sort of ‘feel-out’ period for both teams. We had plenty of chances in overtime but didn’t put any of them away.”
Senior Jenny Moore gave the Loggers (14-3-3) an early lead when she dribbled past defenders and beat the keeper from 12 yards out in the 18th minute.
The teams played even in the first half as the Cobbers had a 6-5 shot advantage. Kara Merfeld made two saves for the Loggers and her counterpart, Ali Nelson made three saves in the half.
Merfeld made three more saves in the second half but the Sarah Rounds converted a free kick for the Cobbers to knot the game up at 1-1.
In overtime, the Loggers generated a few chances as they outshot the Cobbers 3-1 in the extra frames but could not find the game-winner. Nelson made two more save in the extra periods and Merfeld made one to send the match into penalty kicks.
While the Cobbers converted on all three PKs, the Loggers converted just one of four as the Cobbers advanced.
