Hardin-Simmons blanks UT-Dallas
Cowgirls score two second half goals, advance to next round
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Hardin-Simmons beat conference-rival Texas-Dallas 3-0 in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday evening at Paul McGingley Field.
Vivian Wells put the Cowgirls on the board just 8:28 into the game and the defense maintained that lead heading into halftime. It was the 14th goal of the year for Wells.
HSU struck quickly in the second half when Devon Howard on a nice passing combination from Taylor Thigpen to Katie Kuykendall. It was the ninth goal of the year for Howard.
Brittany Vacca's cross found Austin Ricker in the 67th minute. It was her eighth goal of the year.
Rebecca Roth worked the shutout in goal for the Cowgirls with two saves. Brittany Best had five saves for UTD. HSU outshot the Coemts 16-4 and 8-2 on goal.
The Cowgirls are now 20-1 on the year and Texas-Dallas ends its season at 16-5. HSU beat the Comets three times this season, including last Sunday in the ASC Final.
HSU will try to avenge its only loss of the season when it plays Trinity on Sunday at 5 p.m. The Tigers won 3-2 in overtime in the season opener for HSU.
