Stanford shuts down South Carolina
Cardinal extend home-winning streak to 48 games with victory
PALO ALTO, Calif. -- Goals by Mariah Nogueira and Taylor McCann propelled top-seeded Stanford past South Carolina 2-0 in the second round of the NCAA tournament on Friday night before 2,032 fans at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.
Stanford (21-0-1) will play host Boston College (12-5-3) on Sunday in the third round at 4 p.m. ET. Boston College beat Cal on penalty kicks 3-1 in the first match of the doubleheader on Friday afternoon after tying 0-0 through two 10-minute overtime periods.
This will be the third tournament meeting in as many years between Stanford and Boston College. Last year, Stanford won 2-0 in the College Cup semifinals, after beating the Eagles in the quarterfinals in 2009.
Nogueira opened the scoring by heading in Teresa Noyola’s free kick from the right side in the 34th minute, and McCann added to the lead against with a 15-yard shot from Lindsay Taylor’s pass in the penalty area in the 67th minute.
Stanford outshot the Gamecocks (16-7) 26-5 on the night and had nine corner kicks to South Carolina’s zero.
Stanford extended its home winning streak to 48 with the victory and earned its fourth consecutive shutout.
